A REVIEW OF BIRDS, FLOWERS, SKY, AND LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON

The books which help you most are those which make you think the most. I mean that reading a great book that comes from a great thinker is always a very valuable resource specially when it tends to combine nature with nation, love, history, beauty and freedom. Suddenly, POETRY comes to my mind and its big apostle: Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto, Chilean diplomat but mainly poet who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971.

Despite his real name, he used the pen name Pablo Neruda (about 20 years before adopting it legally) to prevent antagonism with his family, who didn’t supported his literary dreams. In his early years and probably in his whole lifetime, Neruda seemed to suffer emotional highs and lows in a very intense way (his mother died a month after he was born), perhaps that’s why he started writing poems when he was only ten. Life was never really easy and during the following years, he often had to stay away from his family, friends, wives and even his country forced by politics or financial matters.

I do like all of Pablo Neruda’s work because it inspired me to write my own poems, but there’s a particular book which I enjoy the most: TWENTY LOVE POEMS AND A SONG OF DESPAIR, published in 1924, it’s to me definitely his poetry masterpiece.

Although it caused commotion and certain controversies because of its sexual intensity, the verse is very unique and surrounded by vigorous, direct, passionate, young and romantic metaphors. The whole book contains an unhappy love affair and also captures the vivid value of animals, plants and other simple things.

I would recommend this book to every one because it doesn’t really matter if you’re feeling extremely depressed, lonely or glad; I bet you’ll find nice elements and images to keep on your mind forever and will inspire you to write your own experiences and fantasies as well.
